o Remedial Math (Elementary)
Take a sample of student math skills to set Custom Objectives, or select a known area of weakness to tackle from the beginning. Activities will be selected to build skills, understanding, and confidence.
o Enrichment Math (Elementary)
Build on students' existing interest and abilities in math. Activities will be selected based on specific student affinities to extend thinking and apply knowledge.
o Word Problems and Logic (Upper Elementary or Middle)
Learn a series of practical strategies to help decode word problems and complete logic tasks. This class can be tailored for those who lack confidence and skill in this area or for those who enjoy this kind of thinking and wish to exercise it further.
o Math Fact Mastery (Elementary or Middle)
Build fluency in basic math facts: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division as appropriate. Practice strategies for timed tests, learn "work-arounds," mnemonics, and other strategies to increase recall. Learn also when and how to selectively use a calculator.
o Fractions, Decimals, and/or Percents
Master basic computation and concepts with fractions and decimals. Use a variety of concrete materials, computer activities, and paper/pencil to become more clear and confident of the meaning and application of fractional parts in all forms.
o Pre-Algebra Skills
Strengthen skills previously learned but not mastered in Pre-Algebra. Take this series in conjunction with Algebra I if you are a struggling Algebra I student, or take it in advance of Algebra I as a review/preview.
o Algebra I Review
For students currently taking Algebra I and struggling with mastery; for students who completed Algebra I but did not attain mastery or confidence prior to taking Geometry or Algebra II.
o Algebra I Preview
A late summer preview of Algebra I for students who want to enter the year with greater confidence.
o Advanced Math Support
A Individual or small group instruction for advanced math courses. Homework support is provided, and students will create a "strategy bank" for what helps them succeed.
o Math Preparation for SAT
Assess strengths and weaknesses for math preparation for the SAT, work on individual skills gaps, and practice strategies for taking the test.
Written Language
o Writing Better Sentences and Paragraphs (Elementary)
Strategies and practice in planning, writing, and revision of basic sentences and paragraphs.
o Essay Writing (Upper Elementary)
Strategies and practice in planning, writing, and revision of paragraphs and essays.
o Writing Better Research Reports (Middle or High School)
Strategies and practice in planning, writing, and revision of research reports. Students may use these sessions to complete assigned reports or can create original reports or report segments (such as outlines, introductions, body paragraphs, conclusions, bibliographies, etc.)
o Writing Your College Application Essays
Students will be guided in exploring themes from their lives that can contribute to an effective college application essay. Students will write and revise one or more different essays and may focus on the early planning and draft stage and/or finalizing essays for submission.
o SAT Writing Preparation
Strategies and practice for the four writing components of the SAT's, including the Essay, Sentence Errors, Improving Sentences, and Improving Paragraphs.
o Handwriting, Typing, and Written Expression (Elementary)
Improve the mechanical skills associated with writing, including manuscript, cursive, and keyboarding. Mechanics will be tied to activities also geared toward better organization and planning for writing.
Reading
o Summer Reading Completion
One to three students can work together on individual or joint required summer reading assignments. Develop and monitor an independent reading schedule, complete assigned written work, and/or prepare a study guide to build strategies for literature.
o Book Club
As a group (of one to three students), select a book or books for inclusion. Develop an independent reading schedule and participate with discussion, exploration, and enrichment activities designed by the tutor. Activities selected based on interests of the students and objectives of the group and may be highly skill-oriented or light and fun.
o Remedial Reading Skills (Elementary)
Custom tailored reading skill instruction based on academic need. May include word recognition and decoding, comprehension skills, and fluency. Activities are adapted to interest, skill level, and learning style of individuals within the context of shared group goals.
o Surviving Textbooks: Middle School Reading Strategies
Reading textbooks requires a different approach to reading than many middle school students are accustomed to. Students will learn ways to approach various reading materials and practice a range of strategies designed to aid in comprehension, study skills, and test preparation.
Study Skills
o Study Hall (All levels)
A one-hour, regularly scheduled "drop-in" session shared by up to three students for homework support. Attendance is optional on any given day with parent permission.
o Notetaking (Elementary, Middle, or High School)
Practice strategies for taking notes from textbooks, literature, and oral presentations. Build skills in reading comprehension and listening.
o Word Enrichment: Vocabulary Skills for Middle and High School
Build a larger vocabulary, improve ability to read unfamiliar words, practice reasoning skills and grow interest in thinking with words. High school level may be specifically geared toward SAT preparation, while middle school students will focus on managing the growing academic vocabulary of middle school.
